All The Facts Aren’t In With Karlsson Case

When we see horrible things such as the Internet abuse of Melinda and Erik Karlsson, often the rush to judgment is far too quick.

In the Citizen newsroom once many years ago, your agent was concerned about a passage in a story about some young men driving on Highway 17 west of Ottawa.

The passage said broken beer bottles were all over the road at the crash site. Instinctively, people said impaired driving. I said, don’t be so sure.

An editor spoke up saying those guys were drunk and joy-riding.

When autopsy results were published, yes indeed, there was drunkenness in the car … everybody but the driver.

The young men had done the right thing … but still paid a horrible price.

Accordingly, leave room in this abuse case for the unexpected. Some fact you couldn’t possibly imagine right now.

It happens.
