City Presents Its Trump Alternative Facts: Reader

The great Ron Benn finally puts some sense to the ridiculous crowd figures presented by the City of Ottawa for its Crashed Ice extravaganza:

Crowd counts that do not involve turnstiles with counters or on tickets scanned are estimates at best.

Estimates that are based on single photos taken from above are point in time estimates, as contrasted with flow estimates, which attempt to address a turnover in the number of individuals who actually attended the event.

What we are observing is someone at Laurier Avenue presenting their flow estimates, with an effort to distract us from the inherent inaccuracy by setting out the methodology that was used to create the illusion. Whether the equation they created or the variables that they inserted into that equation bear any relationship to accuracy is a subject of interpretation. In short, like the Donald’s estimate of his inauguration crowd.

  1. Many articles and opinion pieces have been written about the danger of normalizing Trump’s style, Here we have an example of pols seeing just how exaggerated they can be.

They will soon all think that they can get away with saying something that is not verified at any time.

Orwell coined Newspeak, I think he would have liked alt-facts, too.
