David Gourlay made it official last week that he is running in Kanata North.
The former Ottawa Champions executive is one of Mayor Jim Watson’s closest friends and is married to a long-time top person in the mayor’s office. Gourlay was also awarded the prize created by Watson, The Order of Ottawa.
Current councillor Marianne Wilkinson won’t run for re-election if a person she favours decides to hit the hustings.
Gourlay is backed by former Ottawa Senators executive Cyril Leeder, one of the most respected businessmen in town.
He can be expected to be a loyal backer of Watson and a proud member of the Bobbleheads. If you liked the current Watson team at city hall, you’ll love David Gourlay.
Gourlay came into the picture late in the bidding for leasing the city’s Coventry Road ball park. The RFP looked to have been tailored for a bid from two of the best minor league baseball owners in North America and they were prepared to put a Double-A Blue Jays farm team into Ottawa in the Eastern League.
Instead in a surprise move, the Ottawa Champions won the bidding for the park and a ball team from the lowest level of independent baseball plays out of the park. It has been plagued by attendance problems since its formation.
