City staff just came out with its Annual Development Report, with all kinds of fascinating data about housing and other buildings, densification, etc.

Would be nice if we would also get an annual report documenting how many wetlands have been lost, how many trees and woodlots have been cut down, how much forest has been converted to agriculture, how much “vacant land” has been converted to buildings, etc.

And a report on how many natural spaces have been saved by the city.

That might not take as long but could give the city some incentive to do a few real things to flesh out the skinny report.

    cheers and thx

For every tree cut down, two or three or more should be planted (loss of one mature tree can’t be compensated for by planting one sapling).

The same applies to grassland, wetlands, water diversions.

A score card that shows that more is done to replace any lost asset than on a one-to-one basis would show where the city’s priorities rest.
