Oxford defines boondoggle as:
“An unnecessary, wasteful, or fraudulent project.”
Unnecessary: In the form it is now, yes. If you can’t make commuters’ trips faster downtown than before LRT, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it. And all this in the face of declining transit ridership. Perhaps we don’t need light rail.
Wasteful: Let’s see. The current project’s first two phases didn’t pay for the Vimy Memorial Bridge or get rail to Barrhaven or drive it to Kanata, despite Allan Hubley’s faulty grasp of geography. The Chiarelli plan did all those things for $3.2 billion less than the current two phases. And the Chiarelli plan would have been finished in 2014. This one? Who knows.
Fraudulent: We kept being told how safe this project was when it had sinkholes galore. The downtown core had to be evacuated because of a broken gas line that was part of LRT construction. We could go on. LRT construction became a threat to public safety.
So sure, boondoggle. It qualifies.January 3, 2018 at 8:52 PM #742248
