Today a couple of messages were waiting on my voice machine when I returned home. The first was from Kathleen Wynne informing me about a local gathering in Ottawa that she wanted me (and everyone else, I suppose) to attend. While she has a more pleasant voice I than I anticipated, I don’t appreciate receiving junk mail, junk email, and now junk voice mail.
I called the telephone number left in the call and spoke with a young lady (can we still use that term?) who informed me I had received the call because of something I had done to support the liberal party in the past. I assured her that I had not done so and when she started to be not so pleasant as she was at first, I asked her to remove my phone number from her list.
My question is – should political parties (any of them) be allowed to harass citizens via telephone?

    Sisco:

I’d like to know when politicians stop harassing journalists and other candidates in untoward ways.

    cheers

sisco, the “please remove me from your calling list” regulations passed a number of years ago has an explicit exemption for political parties. No, that is not a joke. And they continue to wonder why we the people hold our elected officials in such low esteem.

The last thing I want to hear at night when I get home are the neighbour’s dogs and politicians.

Thanks, Ron. It seems that the people who make the rules always manage to build in loop holes that exclude them from following what they devise. We should rename politics, and perhaps our judicial system as well, “the downward spiral”.

I have mixed feelings on this one.
Door knocking, and handing out flyers, bulk mailing, emails and phone calls during a campaign are ways to get out the message that an election is coming and here I am.
All salespersons are annoying but perhaps trying to generate voter turn-out ain’t as bad as trying to sell me a set of encyclopedia.

Chaz. I never have any doubt when an election will be happening soon. The visual pollution associated with candidates’ “vote for me” signs is pretty hard to miss. The people who don’t vote won’t vote no matter what anyone tries to do. I think the biggest issue has to do with trust. People are tired of being lied to by self-serving individuals. We suffer as a result as do the politicians who actually do take their responsibilities seriously.

I dislike telemarketing but robo-calls are especially annoying. Now I don’t answer calls from unknown numbers most of the time, or if I do and one these calls comes through I use the block number feature on my phone.

    Remember the old joke K.A.?

The 90 per cent of crooked politicians are making we 10 per cent of honest politicians look bad.

Hey hey now Chaz, ‘’all salespersons are annoying’’. That’s a low blow, don’t put us in the same category as politicians.

Never answer a call from an unknown caller.
If you ignore that advice then : never say the word yes ; never press a number on the keypad (when asked to) , and never give any personal information.
    Kosmo,
Okay- I will admit that I use to look forward to the knock on the door from the Milkman, the Btreadman, the Sheeny Man and the Fuller Brush Man. Oh ya – and the guy that came around sharpening knives.

One of the greatest, reasonably-priced, and underestimated technical advancement in years – call display.
