Freeze-Thaw Cycle Not Blamed For LRT Sinkholes

City officials are saying that the recent freeze-thaw cycles are creating the perfect conditions for potholes.

No doubt this is the first time Ottawa has had freeze cycles and so these potholes are particularly surprising.

Strangely no mention of substandard asphalt being used in the holes previously or the effects on road maintenance of the two-per-cent annual budget increases by Mayor Jim Watson.

So far city officials have not mentioned freeze-thaw cycles being involved in the massive sinkholes on the light-rail line.

  1. The good news is that at least the mayor hasn’t blamed the new potholes on global warming, as he did a year or two ago.

  2. Let’s face it, weather conditions in Ottawa are perfect for decreasing the lifespan of roads from 15 years (I believe this is the expectation) to far less.
My question is: Why aren’t those who work at city hall, i.e. staffers and politicians, putting effort into advancing technology in this area to create new and longer-lasting compounds that are more pliable and resistant to our climate? It seems to me we should be making progress on this front and we’re not.
