Goodbye, Don Butler

This is a disappointing Christmas Eve what with the City of Ottawa not releasing an important document on the Rideau sinkhole. But now there’s a bit of dreary news for journalism.

Reporter Don Butler, he of many memorable stories and a good guy to boot, is leaving the Ottawa Citizen. At least that’s what the Citizen tom-tom system is saying.

Most will recognize Don for his fine reporting skills … a person who could walk into any situation and come up with a good story. But around the Citizen, he will also be remembered as a topnotch administrator who rose to the highest echelons of the newsroom, then decided he wanted to be a reporter again. Now that’s a well-rounded journalist.

Don covered government of all levels plus the National Capital Commission with distinction. In fact, he covered everything.

Don told me once that he kept reporting because he wouldn’t know what to do with himself if he retired.

Well to help him into that retirement, there’s a beer in the fridge at Bulldog World Headquarters that needs to be consumed and some chat to be had.

Come on over, Don.

  1. Ken,
Forget the beer – offer him a job.

Okay, you can have a beer too.

Merry Christmas, I gotta go eat some fruit-cake.
