OMB Approves Glebe Holiday Opening

This is a release from the Glebe Business Improvement Area:

The Glebe Business Improvement Area (BIA) is thrilled to announce that Glebe businesses will be allowed to open on an additional six statutory holidays after the Ontario Municipal Board sided in favour of the Glebe’s application for an exemption from the Retail Business Holidays Act.

The decision was rendered on September 29th, 2016, and goes into effect immediately, granting Glebe stores the option of remaining open this coming Thanksgiving Day on October 10, 2016, as well as five other holidays including New Year’s Day, Family Day, Victoria Day, Canada Day and Labour Day.

“We couldn’t be happier that our members can now choose for themselves whether opening on a holiday is beneficial to their operations, or not,” says Glebe BIA Executive Director Andrew Peck. “Not one business is obligated to open on any or all of exempted dates, and we fully respect the choices of individual businesses, but this exemption now gives them that choice.”

Given its proximity to major attractions and landmarks, the vibrant mix of shops, services and restaurants and all the exciting programming, events and festivals happening in the Glebe, the neighbourhood is now better suited to attract a tourist audience.

“This exemption will allow the Glebe to further contribute to the development of tourism in Ottawa, especially as we rapidly approach celebrations for Canada’s 150th celebration in 2017,” adds Peck. The Glebe BIA consulted widely with both its membership and the surrounding community and received overwhelming support to pursue this application. The Glebe BIA has started preparing a comprehensive information package for its members, which includes material for employees that outlines their rights under Employment Standards Act with respect to working on a holiday.

  1. More traffic. Less peace and quiet. Lansdowne might just become the new ByWard Market with drug dealers, gang members and shootings. Not right away but trends seem to indicate such. Of course my friends call me a worrier. I look at trends.

  2. One cannot deny the fact that times continue to change. Any BIA that has the majority of owners wanting to be open, should be. Let us not forget, Sunday shopping changed and the City has survived. To give designation to only certain regions of the City, is wrong.

Many at present work holidays and they have no choice. Some switch off with fellow employees for their specific desired holiday off. Some have no choice but to work the holiday if their employer has scheduled them for that day.

As far as “drug dealers, gang members and shootings”. Stores being open is not the cause of those issues.
