The Order of the Crown is a national order of the Kingdom of Belgium.  It is one of the highest honours, equivalent to the Order of the British Empire. The Commander’s cross is offered in recognition of artistic, literary and scientific merit and for services rendered.

When: Sunday, June 18 at 2:30 p.m.
Where: Drawing Room, Fairmont Chateau Laurier, 1 Rideau Street, Ottawa

This event is full.

Dr. Runte has worked extensively as an academic, is a member of the Royal Society, past-president of several universities and is a recognized author who received a poetry prize from the Académie française. She has been a leader in international organizations, including the executive of the Club of Rome, the international advisory board for EXPO 2000, presidency of UNESCO Canada, the executive of WUSC and chair of the board of the Foundation for International Training.

Her contributions to economic and scientific growth include service to the board of the Banque Nationale, the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Board, several economic development councils, the boards of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, LifeNet and the advisory board of SunGard SGT.

Her work on the environment and international understanding and dialogue has also been recognized by numerous awards, including several honorary degrees.

The Belgian award especially recognizes her unflagging support for international student and faculty partnerships and exchanges between Belgium and Canada, particularly in developing a substantial exchange program between the Université Catholique de Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL) and Carleton.  The recently signed five-year agreement will support efforts to intensify academic co-operation between the universities, particularly in their mutually strong fields of economics, social science, political science and communication. The agreement will also develop joint research projects and exchange programs, both at the faculty and student level.

Carleton University will be marking its 75th anniversary year with a Founding Day Celebration, honouring the official anniversary of Carleton’s founding on June 18, 1942 with a special reception on Sunday, June 18, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Formal program begins at 2:30 p.m.
