The Civic: From Watson, We Hear Crickets

When it comes to importance, health might just be the biggest issue.

Just one problem. Where is Mayor Jim Watson?

The location of The Ottawa Hospital Civic campus is the most important health decision locally in decades on the most important issue.

Watson, who desperately wanted a place on the National Capital Commission which chose Tunney’s Pasture as the new Civic site, has been remarkably silent on the Civic. Watson smells political danger in a community that is badly split on the question.

Watson is the mayor of Ottawa. What matters here should matter to him. Yet this board member of the NCC and the mayor of this community has turtled on the issue.

His Worship is ignoring his duty to this community in not taking a stand on the Civic.

Watson is caught between friends of the Experimental Farm and opponents of the Tunney’s Pasture site. The mayor is also caught between provincial and federal Liberals. Watson has been courting the federal Grits constantly for a number of reasons mostly involving money and his political future.

Watson, for better or worse, is the leader of this community. He is now part of the NCC.

At present, His Worship is not even leading from behind. He is silent on the Civic.

It is his duty to take a stand on the hospital issue.
