1.1 Million Visit Skateway This Season: NCC

A fantastic winter of skating and walking on Canada’s iconic Rideau Canal Skateway has come to an end.

This is a release from the National Capital Commission

Over the course of 52 days, the NCC registered more than 1.1 million visits to the Skateway, making it a truly memorable season.

The NCC wishes to thank all of this year’s skaters and walkers for joining us in making this 55th season of the Skateway come alive. Highlights of the season included the unfurling of a giant Canadian flag on the 60th anniversary of our beloved maple leaf as part of the National Flag Day celebrations and the addition of dedicated walking lanes that allowed even more people to enjoy this truly Canadian winter experience.

Many thanks as well to the Skateway teams for their hard work and dedication in preparing and maintaining the ice this season. This includes NCC employees and contractors, who worked tirelessly to create exceptional conditions for visitors to the Skateway.

Through our ongoing partnership with Carleton University, the National Capital Commission is gaining valuable tools and data to navigate the challenges of climate change on the Rideau Canal Skateway. This work will enhance our ability to predict and adapt to changing conditions, helping the Skateway to remain more resilient for future generations.

Lastly, the NCC?thanks its partners and vendors for their ongoing collaboration, as well as Access Storage–Cubeit, the official provider of Rideau Canal Skateway storage, and CEECAM, the official webcam provider for the Rideau Canal Skateway.

The only good news in the City is generated by the NCC! The River House and the Canal ….and keeping Sussex street away from developers….Go Toby

    Closely Watching,

Not quite true. The NCC has a proposal on the table to develop the land they’re calling “The Sussex Blocks” which are bounded by Sussex Dr., Stanley Ave., MacKay St. and Thomas St. That’s the three blocks fronting on Sussex between the Rideau River and Rideau Hall.

They held a public meeting at St Bart’s Church last Thursday to present the plan to New Edinburgh residents. It’s part of their National Capital Core Area Plan which they are in the midst of updating with approval expected in June.

There’s more information about the Sussex Blocks on the New Edinburgh News site in a February 18th post by Cindy Parkanyi.
