Americans Angry At Canada, Canadians Angry At Them

That friend of mine who went grudgingly to Florida for a vacation is learning a great deal about Canada on his visit.

First according to his unscientific observations, traffic to Florida from Canada has plummeted precipitously.

Between the Thousand Islands Bridge to the Daytona, Florida-area, he saw four Canadian licence plates. Four … that’s it.

He’s seen very few around the Daytona area as well.

But here is something new.

Friends of his landed in Florida to take a Caribbean cruise. The are on “a week cruise with Holland American out of Fort Lauderdale. He informed us yesterday that so many of Americans on the cruise are quite obnoxious when they learn you are a Canadian. How sad.”

As for my friend. The comment “validates my discomfort in being here.”

He paid for his trip ahead of time and couldn’t get a refund.

Now for the people who don’t think Canadian tourism is important to Florida and the U.S., we give you this. From the Globe and Mail:

Many states rely heavily on Canadian travellers. Earlier this month the U.S. Travel Association said Canada is the top source of international visits to the U.S., accounting for 20.4 million visits last year. It warned a 10-per-cent reduction in Canadian travel could result in US$2.1-billion in lost spending and the loss of 14,000 jobs.

Meanwhile Canadian travellers accounted for nearly one-quarter of all international visits to Florida in 2024, new numbers released Thursday by the state’s tourism marketing agency showed.

Canadian tourism to Florida matters. Americans are likely to discover that through informal boycotts and the fact the U.S. 25-per-cent tariffs are likely to cause a recession in Canada … if they are imposed. Financially struggling people don’t go to Florida.

Look, if Americans want to treat us worse than the 51st state and want to incorporated Canada into their country, don’t expect good treatment from Canadians. We didn’t do anything to deserve this … despite the lies of U.S. President Donald Trump, his Fox friends and his MAGA disciples. The naive people who voted for Trump are buying this pol’s garbage.

Americans don’t understand how much they are disliked around the world. Perhaps they should look at themselves for an answer but Americans are so ethnocentric that they just don’t get it and don’t care.

But when your best friend in a friendless world starts booing your national anthem, they don’t like. Too bad. A few moments of understanding might be educating for Americans. That said, there has always been underlying anti-Americanism in this country.

But don’t don’t expect understanding from south of the border.

The best you can expect from Americans on Canada is they don’t care. Too bad we can’t get back to that.

And don’t mistake our politeness for weakness.

If you’re not welcome in the U.S., there’s a simple solution.

Don’t go there.

I have a friend who has a time share condo in Orlando for two months (Jan and Feb) and he returned home to Burlington last weekend. We were supposed to go down there too with him but we cancelled out. We are also heading to Egypt for a tour in one month. The large majority (90%+) of the tour members will most likely be American. It should be interesting especially since the Egyptians dislike (despise) Trump and his plan for Gaza. I am glad my passport says Canada on it.

I read yesterday that there is growing consternation in Edmonton over the name “Wayne Gretzky Drive”. Many of the locals want the street renamed in light of Gretzky’s affiliation with DumbOld Trumpf. The article went on to note “Gretzky never picked up his companion of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honour, after it was awarded to him in 2009”. Sadly, it appears that some Canadians who have relocated to the U.S. have no time for us either.

There are so many other options for Canadians when it comes to warmer destinations over the winter months or summer for that matter. Florida and other States have become very expensive with grocery prices that match Ottawa’s or surpass it in addition to the poor exchange rates which drastically increase costs. The Algarve in Portugal or the sun coast in Spain are bargains compared to Florida, California, Arizona and Hawaii. Canadians are better appreciated in Europe where people seem far better educated unlike the boorish, ignorant Americans. There are also many other options for Canadians such as Mexico, the Bahamas, etc. Avoiding travel to the USA does send a message to them that there is a cost for having elected a low life criminal.
