3 Levels Of Gov’t Contribute To Traffic Mayhem

A big shout out to our city government, the province and the federal National Capital Commission.

All three levels of government running traffic like a well-oiled jalopy.

Bad enough that the NCC closed the Kichi Zibi Parkway for the weekend due to construction related to the late and troubled LRT western extension and the province closed lanes on Highway 417 in the west end and downtown on the weekend, the city had lanes closed on Carling Avenue on the weekend. That’s the alternative to the busy parkway and 417 construction.

The three traffic disruptions caused north-south traffic woes and mighty east-west ones. Snarls were so bad on Sunday that traffic was heavy on Baseline Road, one of the main east-west routes in the city like the 417, Carling Avenue, and the Ottawa River parkway.

But that’s not all.

One of the main north-south routes in the west end, Woodroffe Avenue, has had its north end closed for construction that was supposed to be finished in October. Now it appears the north end of Woodroffe Avenue will be closed until just before Christmas.

No wonder Knoxdale-Merivale Councillor Sean Devine thinks we have a transportation crisis in the city.

Construction, poor planning, lousy roads, road closures, a wonky LRT and a gutted bus system.

Can’t anyone here play this game?

But how much do you want to bet the NCC’s floating sauna or a new swimming dock on a murky river will be on-time and on-budget?

The city’s transportation department is supposed to be a clearing house which flags the multiple impacts as various project slip around in timing. I’m not sure with the completion penalties on various projects that they have any wiggle room to move timings. Ideally, we would not have these projects underway at the same time.

Expect more chaos when the 417 bridge over the canal starts. It isn’t a rapid bridge replacement project. It will be a constriction point for years.

No one willing to look outside their own silo. Childish? Incompetent? Doesn’t really matter. Pitiful. Just pitiful.

I seem to recall Sean Devine noting that Merivale Road should be closed between Meadowlands and Baseline so a facelift could take place because the view wasn’t pretty enough for his liking. Maybe he’d like to rethink that very bad idea now that he’s had a glimpse of the impact his idea would have to traffic in Nepean and by extension traffic in other parts of the city.
