So why can’t we warm up our cars?

It's cold outside in the winter

Did the city actually DEFINE “idling” as relates to vehicles? Most cars have a start up RPM and once warm it reduces to IDLE, a thing many at city hall do for a lot of their paid time.. just asking?

  2. The Voter says:

Does anyone know if the idling bylaw applies if you’re on private property? For example, on your driveway, in a carport or in your garage with the door open? If you come out, start the car, go back and get toddler 1, strap them in and go back to get toddler 2, it’s quite possible you might be out of the car for more than a minute. I suppose once you put toddler 1 in the car, it’s “occupied” so it’s only the time it takes you to get that child and get them into the car that would matter.

What happens if you have taken your elderly mother shopping and you get the car, bring it close to the mall door and leave it to help her negotiate the poorly cleared sidewalk? If that takes you 62 seconds, you’re in line for a ticket from the same City that doesn’t properly maintain its sidewalks. (With a fob, you can lock/unlock your running car.)

Are either of those scenarios the best use of our bylaw officers’ time?

Does the mayor’s chauffeur turn the engine off when he’s sitting for an hour waiting outside one engagement to drive him to the next one?

  3. Michael Patton says:

they have been very specific, including the warming up of vehicles

Meanwhile, back at Tunney’s bus depot (and Baseline’s and no doubt all the other major hubs), OC Transpo buses sit idling while their drivers are taking a well deserved break.

Hypocrisy is never a good look.

And once again the city has neglected to think of the impact their rules/edicts have on everyday life. If the city took things seriously, maybe people would take city hall seriously. Note to workers at 110 Laurier. “In the morning, wake up, place brain back in head, push “ON” button to engage brain, drink caffeine”.

WOW you want to know how cold it is, ask one of the many homeless in Ottawa.

    Who are we helping anyway???

  7. C from Kanata says:

School buses are not exempt from the bylaw but OC transpo buses are. Buses don’t like to start in -20C (like this upcoming Monday). And drivers of school buses are subject to the same OSHA regulations as OC Tranpo drivers. There are medical exemptions available and after the first ticket is issued, prepare for about 200,000 eligible people to rush to their doctors for a “warm car” note
