State Of The City Goes Private: THE VOTER

Since when is the recent Mayor Mark Sutcliffe State of the City address made to the corporate sector at a ticketed, closed session of a private organization, the Ottawa Board of Trade.

Instead it should have been made to Ottawa City Council at its first meeting of the new year. It’s not like he would have to sit on his words of wisdom for an inordinate amount of time since council was scheduled to meet the very next day.

I checked the Council agenda and there was no mention of the mayor addressing council on this subject. In my mind, this is disrespectful of council and of residents who will neither see nor have the opportunity to discuss his remarks in a timely fashion. They might later be released on video by this private organization but will not form part of the record at the city.

It does demonstrate who he thinks he reports to: the corporate sector instead of the residents of the city and their representatives around the council table … another underlining of who got him into the job and where his allegiances lie.

Any councillor who wanted to hear the address first-hand had to pony up $100 if they are a BOT member and $135 if they are not to get in the door. This will, of course, come out of their office budget so we, who were excluded from the event, are paying for it. Had the mayor delivered this address at council, it would have been free to all and available on the internet.

Time for a recall, Mr. Sutcliffe.

What is even sadder than the lack of respect that the Mayor showed council is that no one on council has spoken up about this obvious ‘dissing’.

    Ron,

I suspect many of them may have been in the room. They got to hear it so what’s the issue? And, of course, a lot of them are bankrolled by the same people … who were also in the room.
