Canada: Not Ally But Subject Nation: FRUM

One of the strengths of the United States is its allies. It’s losing them, according to pundit David Frum.

This interview was posted a month ago by PBS. It is amazingly prescient:

When I was in the Canadian forces I attended a seminar by a US general. I will never forget him saying that the US does not have any friends, only interests.

  2. David says:

The USA maintains about 1000 military bases abroad – whose declared function is to “protect American interests.” But the media line is that these bases “support the American role as global policeman.”

Very interesting insights by Mr. Frum. Thank you for making it available to us, Ken.

Most notable to me is his reference to how Nixon tried to put his ‘stooge’ in charge of the FBI to undermine the Watergate coverup investigation, but that the FBI refused to co-operate. While Nixon’s attempt was not done in a public manner, Trump’s efforts are out in the open.

If/when the FBI reports effectively to the White House in contrast to the government (the distinction is vital), then the ability to control what the investigators investigate is compromised. Looking for a comparable? Consider how closely linked the FSB (successor to the KGB) is to Putin.

The events of the past few days show us why Trump and Putin get along so well.

    Dictators.

    cheers
