Regular Transit Service Resumes Friday

This is a release from the City of Ottawa:

Mayor and Members of Council,

The purpose of this email is to provide an update on OC Transpo’s operations for tomorrow, Friday, February 14.

Small accumulations of snow have continued this afternoon. Road conditions and forecasted weather have significantly improved, and the Severe Storm Schedule will be lifted at the conclusion of today’s service. For customers, this means a return to regular weekday service tomorrow.

O-Train Line 1 service will continue along the entire line and some residual delays are expected this evening as Rideau Transit Maintenance (RTM) is finishing snow clearing in certain areas.  Lines 2 and 4 service continue along the entire line with some potential delays as snow clearing activities conclude. Tomorrow, O-Train service on Lines 1, 2, and 4 will continue to operate as planned on a weekday schedule.

Para Transpo service continues to operate with short delays to ensure the safety of customers and staff. Customers are encouraged to use the My Para Transpo app to track the status of their trips.

We will be notifying our customers that regular service will resume on Friday, February 14, through our regular communications channels, including octranspo.com, the 560560 text service and social media posts.

We thank our customers for their continued patience as we navigate this severe weather event, and we will be capturing lessons learned and best practices to incorporate in future severe weather events.

Our team is also tracking a possible winter storm this weekend and will continue to share updates as information becomes available.

Thank you,

Renée Amilcar

General Manager, Transit Services Department

Directrice générale, Services de transport en commun

It’s incomprehensible that 12 inches (30 cm) of snow can grind Canada’s capital city almost to a standstill. People read on the internet that “commencing today at 3:00 PM snow will begin to fall and will accumulate to 30 cm within an 8 hour period” then scamper back into their homes like the groundhog who has just seen its shadow. It’s time to toughen up and remember that Canadian winters can be harsh. Put snow tires on your car, wear a warm coat, put on a toque and mittens, and embrace that which makes Canada great. Cowering from winter because the internet has frightened us with “this might happen” weather reports is not the Canadian way.

Perhaps Mme Amilcar could define “regular” transit service.

Is that OC Transpo’s usual incompetent offerings or are we looking at actual regular, reliable service across the city? The second alternative would actually follow the published timetables while the first regards any timetables or other standards as mere suggestions.
