Cyclist Condemns Bulldog For Car Picture: BLUESKY

It’s the ones you never see coming that get you.

The ones you prepare for … not a problem.

How when The Bulldog is trying to warn people of dangerous weather does it get criticized? The cyclists have found a way.

In the eyes of bikeview.ca, pictures of bad weather should not be used if they involve cars. Presumably, the only proper way to illustrate bad weather is from a bike.

How do you see that coming? Perhaps cars are not allowed in weather warnings or on The Bulldog anymore? Are we woke-less? Oh no.

Odd, but I thought the post was about a weather warning, not the war on cars … or bikes for that matter.

It’s hard to know how The Bulldog became so myopic or car-centric that storms must be illustrated from autos. Mindset perhaps. So unthinking.

Nothing like a photo from the drivers seat in traffic while talking about freezing rain

The perception in the cycling community is that The Bulldog is against cycling. How can you be against cycling? Good exercise, fun, not a bad way to commute to work if you choose … fill your boots.

The Bulldog supports cycling. There … I said it … again.

What we’re concerned about here at Bulldog World Headquarters is the idea that cycling in Ottawa is a four-season mass-commuting form of transportation. The weather here doesn’t support that position.

Were this temperate Amsterdam, a whole new ballgame. Mass bike commuting would be high on the list of Bulldog public-policy positions. But Ottawa is different than Amsterdam … lousy weather and only one canal. That said, compared to other area municipalities which are canal-less, we are the veritable Venice of Eastern Ontario.

Snow, ice, winds, cold, rain, thunderstorms, heat, smoke make everyday biking problematic. Want proof? Check the bike lanes on bad weather days (in fact, check some of them on good days). Look, if people don’t want to cycle, there’s nothing you can do to stop them (thank you Yogi Berra, wherever you are).

That said, pedal. It’s fun and good for you. However, please be careful about the cycling gear you wear. The rare lycra is believed to be endangered in the Amazon rainforest.

And in the interests of fairness (because that’s the kind of people we are), we are running the picture of a cyclist in an ice storm.

There you have it. The Bulldog … a heart of gold.

In the interest of those choosing to live life looking at the green side of the grass … let’s be careful out there.

You’re right, Ken. I did not expect to wake up this morning and read complaints from a cyclist in March in the middle of a cold, cloudy, rainy, dreary week in March. One thing I have learned in my many years on the planet is some people aren’t happy unless they’re unhappy about something.

This is unbelievable! Talk about myopic!

Would this person be equally offended if you’d used a photo from a bus or one of a pedestrian in the freezing rain? I don’t drive any more but certainly know from both past experience and current observation that the majority of those facing driving a bus, car, truck or bicycle in this weather will be behind the wheel of a car or a passenger. Therefore it makes eminent sense to portray that perspective in an accompanying photo.

Newsflash to Bikeview: It’s not all about you!

In many community meetings I see a strong cycling lobby present. Obviously well organised. I objected to the cyclists objecting that Huntmar road improvements should not be 4 lane but 2 lanes and 2 lanes for bike lanes. I had the pertinence to ask if they would be biking to Costco to pick up toilet paper or home Depot for lumber on their bike from Stittsville. Of course they were not from Stittsville, they were urban bikers trying to impose their love of bike lanes on suburban projects. They did succeed in lobbying for bike lanes in the future project starting this spring. The $27M Tunnel To No Where, on the books since around 1995 under Terry Fox Road will now have bike lanes. I didn’t object, the project was just made that little bit more absurd so why not?
