U.S. Attitude Drives Canadian From Florida

My friend, who had a prepaid vacation in Florida he was unprepared to lose, got fed up with statements by U.S. officials such as Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis below and came home.

He didn’t feel right spending money in the U.S. while people such as DeSantis blathered away against Canada in the usual all-knowing, ethnocentric manner of many Americans.

In a full day driving from Florida, my friend saw two Canadian licence plates. This mirrors his observations around the Daytona, Florida area. Almost no Canadian plates when in previous years they were very common.

My friend left two weeks pre-paid vacation on the table as he came home early. He specifically mentioned DeSantis as a major reason he forfeited part of his holiday. Next year Spain or Portugal for him.

Canadians need to keep in mind that the USA has become one of the most unsafe countries to visit. It’s always in the back of your mind that if Trump makes more disparaging comments about Canadians, his goon followers (MAGA) may be provoked in committing acts of violence on Canadians as they did at the Capitol in Washington. In addition, the Governor of Florida indicated that Canadians are insignificant to Florida’s tourism economy. Better to stay home or go elsewhere where Canadians are welcome and feel safe. The USA has become a risky place to visit, particularly in Republican States.

Luckily our family passports expired in the final quarter of 2024. My wife and I are not world travelers, instead using the internet to view images of Stonehenge, the Taj Mahal, etc, etc, to get a closer look at out-of-country tourist sites. If we’re going to travel outside our immediate realm we’re happy to visit Canadian destinations and speaking with tourists from other countries. When in Rome do what the non-Romans do.

Hopefully more Canadians will view Canada as their safe haven. Those needing that bit of warmth must now question their loyalty to their nine country, Canada, as opposed to giving their hard-earned money to a state/country so disrespectful of ours.
