Don’t Push The Americans Too Far: CRERAR
Most Canadians are proud their politicians are standing up for their provinces and country.
But these leaders must be wary that their responses to U.S. President Donald Trump’s confusing management style don’t fuel a burst of U.S. patriotism. When Americans rally together under the banner of patriotism, they become dangerous so sometimes it’s best to ease off and not deliver the knockout punch.
George W. Bush won the 2000 presidential electoral college by one state, Florida. At that time the U.S. was a divided nation much like it is today but with a more politically astute administration. However, on September 11, 2001, Americans rallied together and declared war on terrorism after Osama bin Laden’s attack on New York City and the Pentagon.
Since his re-election last November, Trump has caused turmoil within the U.S. and around the world … most notably through billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and his poorly planned government-cutting project, Trump’s ill-advised relationship with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, and his misunderstanding of the concept and impacts of tariffs.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford recently threatened to impose a 25-per-cent surcharge on Ontario electricity flowing to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota. Additionally, he has threatened to halt the flow of electricity to these states if Trump refuses to reconsider his gamble with tariffs on Canada. Most Americans will understand the reasoning behind the increase price and point their fingers at Trump. But, if Ford turns off the flow of electricity to the aforementioned states, blackouts will result, and Americans will not hesitate to view this as an act of aggression. Ford doesn’t need to provide Trump with a reason to move U.S. military forces north. Hopefully Ford sees the potential impact of shutting off power entirely.
Trump is reeling and the U.S. could implode anytime now, Ford does not need to give Trump the opportunity to regain his balance.

Should we buckle then and allow Trump to win on any or all of the issues that are now in contention? When a bully wins, it just gives him more incentive to amp things up and he becomes a more dangerous entity. Winning points against Canada or any other country will just push Trump to up the ante and make even more demands.
The schoolyard bully who gets away with stealing your lunch today will be back tomorrow looking for your lunch and your hat. You have to stop them early or they will continue to escalate. They learn no lessons when you let them keep your lunch except to come back again with further demands.
