Take Down Those U.S. Flags, Ottawa

Why are we flying unnecessary U.S. flags in Canada?

You see them in arenas and gymnasiums, put there out of friendship and easier to leave up then take down between games. Well, friendship has disappeared with U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly insulting Canada and even questioning its sovereignty. Don’t think dictator Vladimir Putin has done that. Maybe we should start flying Russian flags where the American ones are now. Putin is respecting Canada much more than Trump.

The city should ensure that no superfluous U.S. flags should be flown on municipal properties and buildings. Also our local universities should do their own search for random U.S. flags. If Carleton University wants to start its search, administrators should check out the Ravens Nest.

We’re treating Americans as friends by flying their flag. They’ve proven repeatedly recently that they are not our friends. Canada is not the 51st state and the prime minister is not addressed as governor. The Americans should stop acting like teenagers.

And if sports franchises are concerned that the U.S. anthem is booed in Canada, there’s a solution. Don’t play it. We’re not an American colony. If we’re not the 51st state, maybe we should stop acting like we’re one.

When the U.S. respects Canada, this country should respect the U.S. Until then, elbows up.

I’m with you on the flags but not so sure on the anthem-singing.

It’s a quid pro quo – we play the American anthem here before games against US teams and, when our teams play in the US, they play our anthem before those games. When two Canadian teams or two American teams meet, the other country’s anthem isn’t played.

The hard part is staying connected with those who did not vote for Trump. He wants to divide us and to inflame his citizens. Do we need to hold a mirror up against the entire population, a population who has always been the mightiest and claimed to the best? I like our not so loud approach to not visiting and not buying American products! They’ll get it.

Couldn’t agree more in taking down American flags in City facilities or anywhere else. Many other cities across Canada have already taken them down and the City of Ottawa should follow suit. We are flying a flag representing an oppressive and aggressive dictatorship run by a lying criminal bent on destroying our country and values.

It’s time for the federal government to invest in a “fun”, inexpensive project! I don’t know if there’s a common flag for the all indigenous peoples within Canada or not, although I think not. If they all agree on a design, they could design one to be flown next to the Canadian flag across the country. I’m not sure how their various cultures integrate, but if they have a single flag that represents their commonalities there should be lots of empty flag poles on which they can be flown. And if we need more poles, we can erect them.

How about renaming the part of Sussex where the US embassy is located, that way the mail will be addressed to the embassy such as: 490 Canada is Sovereign Drive. (was 490 Sussex Drive).
Canada Post will not deliver mail to a old address. So all mail will need the new street name, and the white house “address book” for its embassies will have to list it that way!
