POTHOLES: Look Back In Anger: QUOTABLE
(Potholes are) a sad indictment of the politicians who have run our road policies for years. … the city has not budgeted enough for roads, and it looks like we are now paying for the neglect. This year, the city budgeted $12.3 million for potholes, and $89.6 million for road rehabilitation and resurfacing. Ottawa has 6,000 kilometres of roadway, and it doesn’t seem as if the budget for roads is enough to keep up with the required maintenance and renewal.
Mohammed Adam, Ottawa Citizen columnist
Former Citizen colleague Adam cites a number of locations in his column where potholes are a menace.
However I defy him to find a location worse than the temporary roads abutting the western light-rail construction on Richmond Road. They are the worst pothole-ridden stretch of road your agent has ever seen in this city or any other.
Driving at night at this location is downright dangerous. Potholes are so deep in place that a compact car can bottom-out on that so-called thoroughfare.
The western portion delay of the light-rail project is so late that it has been disastrous for businesses along Richmond Road. Add potholes to that mix and Richmond is a disgrace … particularly for one of the main east-west roads in the city.
Richmond Road is one of the most historic thoroughfares in this city but one wonders if it was as bad in pioneer days as it is today.

Unfortunately I had to replace two tires and a front rod this winter after “new” potholes appeared on roads that had previously been safe to drive on. The good news was at least I didn’t have to replace the rims. Ottawa is now so far behind the curve on road maintenance that we’ll likely never catch up because new problems will develop on roads while old, decrepit roads are being attended to. (Musical note: I can’t stop “The Circle Game” from playing in my head right now.)
