DIPLOMACY: Prepare For The Post-Trump Era
It will be important for Canada to develop its foreign policy not only for the era of Trump but for the long term.
The Trump era will last less than four years and, depending on the outcomes of mid-term elections, could be even shorter either because he might be removed or severely constrained. We need to deal with his administration for as long as it lasts but simultaneously prepare for the administration that will be sworn in in January 2029. We don’t know yet what that will look like and so our preparations need to be based on what the various options will be. It will be too late when that administration is upon us to start figuring out our future path.
Low Taxes Don’t Work: JEFF LEIPER
In the meantime, we need to respond to the Trump era, by shoring up our relations with other like-minded countries and, as necessary, working around the U.S. to maintain the world order and our place in it. If the Americans are prepared to play in the sandbox with the rest of the world, well and good but they should no longer control the sandbox. They have, by their actions in the past few months, ceded any right they may have had to be the leader of the pack.
Canada needs to form strategic alliances with countries and organizations that have similar goals and are prepared to join in partnerships among equals, each bringing their strengths to the table. While we will be always dependent to some extent on our friends and allies, we have to maintain our independence and sovereignty.

Canada needs (A) to ensure it is defended and protected against USA aggression and (B) looking – economically and diplomatically east and west; to the Caribbean; to Central and South America. That is all.
