Carling Ave. Botched For Transit: QUOTABLE
“For years, the city has been approving highrises on Carling Avenue under the pretense that their residents would be one day served by an LRT line. This was obviously never built and the new TMP has replaced it with bus rapid transit (BRT), expected construction … to be determined. All that’s actually planned for Carling by 2046 are regular bus lanes of the non-rapid variety. It’s transit-oriented development without the transit: magic!”
Ottawa writer Jordan Moffatt
How long did people campaign to get light rail down Carling Avenue so that Ottawa would experience economic uplift along the line?
But city planners were determined to put LRT down the Ottawa River parkway so that it would get to Kanata faster than by starting and stopping on Carling.
Strangely, but unknown to city planners, Carling Avenue residents are people, too. Just as much people as Kanata residents but somehow city planners valued those west-enders over Carling Avenue folks.
Now the train isn’t going to Kanata and builders are still building on Carling Avenue in anticipation of some kind of rapid transit but how much do you want to bet Carling BRT will never happen?
We’ve taken a street that could have been both transit and car useful and, in the end, just poured more cars onto it.
What’s is take to get something right at Ottawa City Hall?

How does the cost of a unit along Carling compare to that of one of a similar size along the Parkway with its Ottawa River and Gatineau Hills views that will never be blocked by other buildings? There was/is a lot more money for developers building along the Parkway than they could ever have collected by building along Carling.
Which fact didn’t escape the keen minds in the Planning Department or around the Council table.
