Is Amilcar Excelling At OC Transpo? BENN
Membership in industry groups and attending conferences is not, nor should it be, unusual.
These are valuable tools for a manager and executive. They provide the opportunity to expand one’s knowledge, and to establish connections with similar organizations. Connections that can be used to seek solutions to challenges faced. Especially so in industries facing changes.
Taking on a leadership role in industry organizations should only be done when:
- you have the full support of your superiors (council); and
- you have the cycles to do both your day job and your industry organization role well.
The key word being ‘well’.
Council should ask OC Transpo general manager Amilcar two questions:
- does she think she is excelling in her leadership role at OC Transpo (not a one word answer); and
- does she have the cycles to both improve her performance at OC Transpo while meeting the expectations of the international industry organization as president of UITP – Advancing Public Transport..
Failing at either is not an option.
Ron Benn, a finance executive, has been a member of the Centrepointe Community Association for the better part of three decades.

Amilcar’s position as President of UITP ends this June at the Hamburg Germany Summit/UITP General Assembly so the questions relating to balancing both roles MAY not matter anymore unless, of course, she does get re-elected.
Council asking serious questions of management is delusional at best mainly because they would have to question their performance. That’s not going to happen.
Challenging council to perform their duties of oversight should be a constant effort Donna. There is so much room for improvement.
