No To New City Security: CULLEN

This is a note to The Bulldog from community activist and former Bay councillor Alex Cullen:

Boo!

These security measures are overkill. Ottawa City Hall was designed to have Cartier Street go through the centre of the building and be used as a pedestrian thoroughfare.

This will restrict access to two public art galleries, three government service centres (municipal, provincial, federal), and a wedding chapel, not to mention the council chambers.

Access to councillor offices and mayor’s office are too easy. Secure the two ends of the second floor rather than the whole complex

It’s probably time to rethink if mayor’s office and city manager etc is in right part of building complex. I’d move the hoteling desks into that part and get mayor and councillors into the same actual building.

    Miranda,

The mayor and city manager are already behind a locked door. You have to ring a bell, state your business and get buzzed in to access their end of that floor. I haven’t tested it but I have heard that the plate glass door is bulletproof. There are also secure staircases inside the area that they can use to get the mayor out in an emergency.

On Councillor’s Row, you only get as far as the receptionist before you encounter locked doors. They call to announce that you’re there and someone comes to meet you and escort you to the councillor’s office or a meeting room. They then escort you out when you’re finished. If the reception area is unsafe, there are several other exits that councillors can use that are securely locked from the outside.

Both those areas are already very secure. The ‘danger zones’ would be once they leave their office areas to go to places like the Council Chamber or the parking garage.
