What’s The Deal With City Scanners? MULVIHILL

The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Is the truth about security scanners really what Ottawa residents are getting from city council or is it just one big-old whitewash? Serious question.

Suddenly, security at city hall is of the utmost importance and yet nothing untoward has been splashed across the local news about possible threats. Citizens haven’t been warned of unimaginable risks to themselves or to elected officials.

Scanning machines and associated staff will cost taxpayers upwards of $1 million … why?

It is completely understandable that right next door at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, security scanners are in place for the protection of the courts. Yours truly recently had cause to enter the courthouse and the scanners went  ballistic … two new titanium knees and a new titanium shoulder send alarm bells screaming.

Ottawa City Hall is supposed to be an open, welcoming environment … a cut-through heading to the Rideau Centre; a drop-in to take in the hustle and bustle of our city hall at work; Christmas concerts; Easter egg hunts; political events; Rink of Dreams …

Will this ramped up security ruin the warm atmosphere that now exists? Probably.

Outside of those who make these city-altering decisions, residents are at a loss as to exactly what happened to warrant this increased security.

Or is it simply that bruised but still over-inflated egos need stroking?

Your mention of Rink of Dreams made me realize city hall should scan everyone before they hop on the ice. Oops, silly me, skates have steel blades. I’m sure that wouldn’t stop council from opting in.

Seems to me that during this dreadful era of Trump. Proud Boys, Convoys and threats on the public service it us a reasonable step for City Hall to take precautions that most Federal buildings have had for several decades.

“Seems to me that during this dreadful era of Trump.” Yet it was a certain political demographic who tried to assasinate him… twice! #notatrumpfan

Elizabeth … until the last few years, I don’t think we’ve ever had to go through scanners, remove belts, be wanded, etc. At least I don’t remember going through that rigamaroll.
