City Security … First Person: BENN
I used the parking garage at city hall recently for an event at a location near that part of town.
The parking lot was next to full (only 20 spaces available at 11:30 a.m.). That is a lot of cars for a facility within an estimated less than one kilometre walk from the Parliament Station. Curious councillors might want to know why so many people do not take public transit.
The process of getting through the main floor was not particularly onerous. On exiting the elevator, I could walk directly out to Laurier Avenue or pass through security to use the Lisgar Street exit. There was a contract (badged by a non-city employer) security guard near the elevator, to prevent people from bypassing security. I had to deposit my mobile phone, keys and eyeglasses (half frame, metal – would those really trigger an alarm?) in a tray. No waiting for the two contract security guards to process me. Total elapsed time perhaps 15-30 seconds.
On the way back, after lunch around 1:15 p.m., there was a small line up at the Lisgar entrance. Two contract security guards. Same process as before except I had to remove my belt (not a requirement at the other end). This added to the wait time on the way through as people had to reassemble their attire before moving along. Total elapsed time perhaps two minutes.
Upshot: Daily operating costs involve at least five contract security guards, more likely six when one considers the need to cover a position for people who are on a break. How hard would it be for staff to multiply 6 X 40 hours X $/hour to get the answer (all variables would be known to someone in city hall)?
All in all, not a significant challenge as in time lost, but I am left to wonder about the morning rush-hour when employees are arriving to work at once.
