Barrhaven Buses Unreliable: HILL

On my commute home recently, I took some extra time to visit with Barrhaven transit riders at Tunney’s Pasture.

I have heard loud and clear that afternoon peak return routes to Barrhaven are inconsistent, unreliable, and ill-spaced.  This is very frustrating for a number of reasons:

The whole purpose of the New Ways To Bus was to increase reliability.  It’s hard to have legitimacy when that outcome is clearly not being achieved.

Even if the routes are going to be late/canceled, the status of these routes is not updated on the real-time app because the app only accurately reflects the routing once that bus has started its route. Not a big help when waiting at Tunney’s.

The Barrhaven-to-Tunney’s segment has been slowed as a result of the LRT Stage 2 construction.

What am I working on to improve the situation?

First, I have represented this concern loudly and on numerous occasions at meetings, so they are tracking my perspective on the importance of reliability, especially at Tunney’s. Second, the city is procuring more buses. There have been setbacks in the e-bus procurement program. Along with my colleagues on transit committee, I have been pushing staff to purchase more diesel buses to address this setback, and … the city recently procured 11 buses from Kitchener. More e-buses will come online over the next several years as well. Third, there will be a significant improvement in commute time once Stage 2 construction is completed. Yes – this is in the medium to long term (about 18 months), however, that construction delay is the most significant reason our commute is brutal right now.

I will be back at Tunney’s, this time with OC Transpo staff, to discuss the above, and demonstrate the issues first-hand to them.

When Renee Amilcar proudly announced the “New Ways to Bus” initiative was she unaware that the Barrhaven-to-Tunney’s segment has would be slowed as a result of the LRT Stage 2 construction? Why was this program rushed forward when it was already known that this impediment existed?

A common refrain from council is that once the LRT is finished … With no time frame on when. With no effort to get the contractor to complete a section. Complete as in finish the work, clean up and clear out.

The LRT is a case study in how work expands to fill the time available. Pitiful. Just pitiful.
