Tierney Embarrasses His Voters: WHOPPER WATCH
“If I can open up a lane of traffic seven or eight hours in advance of the next crew coming to move those cones, I’m just going to do it. It’s sad when a councillor physically has to do it.”
Beacon Hill-Cyrville Councillor Tim Tierney
Tierney has been dancing around the issue of him throwing a traffic safety cone in a picture in the Ottawa Citizen.
It was a staged photo so it’s not the real thing, Tierney says. Staged or not, there’s Tierney doing it. Shouldn’t he be having a little chat with the Ottawa Police Service about his deportment? Moving construction safety cones is serious business.
The fact of the matter, staged or not, the photo looks like the councillor (who should be setting a better example) is moving safety pylons … at least one. This is not the example a person in authority should be setting for impressionable youngsters. If the councillor is throwing cones, it kind of looks like fun. You where that leads.
Furthermore, the councillor is not a professional engineer so he doesn’t know is there’s a reason for those safety pylons. Usually they are placed in roadways to protect drivers.
Tierney has a cutline on a photo of him throwing a safety cone which says that you shouldn’t do that because it could get you in trouble with the Highway Traffic Act. He’s right, so why is Tierney sending the opposite message to the public with the picture.
And another point. In the Citizen story says: “Tierney says his community has been in ‘complete paralysis,’” No it isn’t. When did the east end become Manhattan with its terrible traffic? And even in Manhattan the traffic does move … sometimes slowly … but it does move. Guess it doesn’t in the east end. Amazing.
If Tierney has aspirations for higher office, as some say he does, you don’t succeed this way.
The councillor must have missed the last federal election. Canadians chose a serious and accomplished man for prime minister and tossed out his populist opponent thoroughly. The message is there. Stop the showboating with the media and do some serious work. Forget naming snowplows to get your name in the media. That’s Jim Watson-esque. That man’s days in politics are over. Get serious or be gone. Ottawa has enough problems that Tierney doesn’t have to go around inventing them … like tossing safety cones.
And look at the featured Whopper above. If that isn’t intent, someone changed the meaning of the word.
Tierney is a member of a weak council. He’s making it weaker.
The people of Beacon Hill-Cyrville deserve better leadership. Tierney’s showboating is embarrassing.
