Hill Gets Speed Cameras Wrong: CRERAR
Barrhaven West Councillor David Hill has very little insight concerning the speed camera issue.
Most school zones now contain black-and-yellow bendable posts sticking out of the ground to notify drivers they are traveling in an area in which children might be present. As well, some have added cautionary bumps to the road.
Recently, while I was returning home from grocery shopping, I was driving through a residential neighbourhood and had to stop my car abruptly as two pedestrians were crossing the street, both clad in dark clothing. I didn’t see these jaywalkers until the last moment.
This brought to mind something a Bulldog commenter once said regarding Elmer the Safety Elephant. The way to make our roads safer is not via fines, but through education.
Here are some helpful hints for the councillor:
1) walk facing traffic;
2) look both ways before crossing the street;
3) always cross the street at corners;
4) don’t run out from between parked cars;
5) ride your bicycle the same direction traffic is moving;
6) wear white at night;
7) always wear a seatbelt when traveling in a car.
The answer to most issues is not to fine people, it’s through education and training.
