Sutcliffe’s Slick, Vague, Unfair Lansdowne Video
This is a really disappointing, but very slick, Lansdowne video from Mayor Mark Sutcliffe.
It is low on facts, high on inuendo.
Sutcliffe treatment of well-meaning citizens who oppose the project in unfair. They provide more facts around Lansdowne than the mayor does. For example, Sutcliffe neglects to note that the City of Ottawa hasn’t made a nickel from Lansdowne 1.0. In fact, the so-called waterfall of city money is poured into a maintenance fund, so the plan was designed so that the city makes nothing from it but has enormous capital and debt costs.
That’s just one example.
A mayor should rise above the fray and lead, not issue propaganda like this. He should not demean his worthy opponents.
I know some of the opponents of Lansdowne and they don’t live in the Glebe thus the unfortunate branding of NIMBYism is wrong and appalling that it is used against some of the finest and most-capable people in the community.
NIMBYism is the biggest slur in municipal public policy and name-calling of the worst order.
That’s not in the job description of a good mayor.
People are tired of being told what a good deal Lansdowne is when it is not. Any profit for the city in those residential towers being constructed on-site? Who pays the capital costs of this project? What about the interest that appears in the operating budget that already has a hole in it?
Where’s the revenue for the city for a half-billion dollars.
And the characterization of the new central library is deceptive. It is a city partnership with the federal government. Furthermore, don’t forget the city’s terrible history with big projects such as Lansdowne 1.0 and light rail. This city isn’t capable of producing successful big projects
This is not how a mayor should act.
What happened to the journalist in Mayor Mark Sutcliffe?

So did taxpayers pay for this sales pitch for the City-OSEG partnership?
j — i was wondering about that as well – cheers k
CBC has an article that the Ottawa Charge Woman’s hockey team may be “financially unviable” and may leave with Lansdowne 2.0. Of course this changes the revenue assumptions. Remember when they removed parking from the Ottawa Lynx stadium and it became unviable?
The city just makes assumptions that teams will stay no matter how inconvenient they make it for them.
I expect OSEG helped in some way.
“for a hundred years Landsdowne belonged to the citizens of Ottawa” then in 2014 and the following years it was GIVEN to a commercial development and sports company with Ottawa taxpayers bearing much if not all the capital costs with increasing costs on an annual basis and the operating costs each year.. returns being in an imaginary waterfall. Resisting a further debt of $500.MILLION is not Nimbyism it is debt management something Mark in his gilded house does not see nor understand
