Mayor Mark Sutcliffe’s campaign launch last week was a little wobbly. Fine. Municipal campaigns are long. There is no prize for winning the first news cycle in May.

What observers should resist is the temptation to extrapolate from a single awkward moment (balloons) or controversy (the mayor’s use of advertising) to the outcome of an election that is just less than five months away.

If there is one lesson from Ottawa municipal politics, it is that incumbents rarely lose and challengers underestimate them often.
