CBC correction on a part of a story that didn’t need a correction
In fact, that’s exactly what happened.
City councillors asked for the funds raised from traffic cameras be sent to a road-safety fund.
Yes, past practice had the money sent elsewhere but that past practice was changed (by council at least). Staff assumed that the money should continue to go to the previous sources. “Assumed” is not an excuse. Assuming something led to the staff mistake.
If council orders something, council should expect that it be done by staff. No excuses.
If staff thinks the council directive was wrong, staff should take it up with council. It’s up to council to change the bylaw, not staff.
