Are Canadians Dumping U.S. Vacations?

A friend of your agent is travelling to Florida (grudgingly for he dislikes U.S. President Donald Trump) for a vacation because he’s locked into a pre-purchased condo rental.

On Saturday, he had driven four-fifths of the way to his destination and had seen along Interstates 81, 64 and 95 only three Canadian licence plates. On his trips south in other years, he normally saw “hundreds.”

Hardly scientific, but perhaps this is a sign that Canadians are practising on a huge scale their own form of economic warfare by abandoning their southern vacations to the U.S.

In years past when your agent drove south and the Canadian dollar was low, I’d hear “where are the Canadians?” from Americans.

Where are the Canadians now?

The Americans haven’t seen anything yet.

We have heard that history repeats itself. As we know, in 1939, Adolf Hitler invaded Poland. Soon, as Canadians stop traveling southwards, and are not available for the average American to say “Hi y’all” to, American thought will turn to “out of site, out of mind” and the mutual admiration between our societies will be a thing of the past. The door will then be opened for Adolf Trump to move his forces northward. The discussions Dumbold Trumpf is currently having with Vladimir Putin likely include a clause that states Russia will remain neutral in any American provocation in North America. Hopefully this scenario never comes to pass

Do not underestimate Canadian prestige abroad. We are a high ranking member of the global community. Not feared and despised.

We have a great reputation for the few people who care. Australia has a great rep but when was the last time you thought about Australia?

    Let’s be realistic.

I won’t even touch down in the US until Trump is history.

Canadians make up around 2% of Florida tourism according to VisitFlorida.org. Here are the numbers for 2024 which were just reported. Next year’s numbers will be interesting but honestly, we tend to overestimate our own importance to US tourism where domestic tourism is 91.5% of all visits. Highlights from 2024 data also include:

142.9 million visitors traveled to Florida in Calendar Year (CY) 2024, marking a 1.6% increase from CY 2023 and the highest visitation on record.
130.7 million domestic visitors in CY 2024, reflecting a 1.3% increase from the previous year.
8.9 million overseas visitors in CY 2024, up 6.6% from CY 2023, and the closest to full recovery since 2019.
3.3 million Canadian visitors in CY 2024, representing a 1.2% increase from the previous year.
Domestic visitors made up 91.5% of total visitation, overseas visitors accounted for 6.2%, and Canadian visitors represented 2.3%

I think your figures are light C.

Between permanent residents, winter residents and tourists, Florida’s foreigner are about 30 per cent Canadian year-round.

Val. I have stopped wearing baseball caps and sports paraphernalia with logos of any team that has a U.S. homebase. In fact the only baseball cap I wear these days is a Blue Jays cap with the big red maple leaf on front. While this may seem inconsequential, I have been a New York Rangers fan for over 60 years, yet I’m feeling no pain for my decision.

Very few are travelling to Florida in their car in the middle of February. Talk to me around the March breaks… Cheers
