Bold Coyote Spotted In West Carleton: KELLY

Our office received a coyote report this week from a city employee who lives in West Carleton. She says she was followed home on Thursday by what she describes as a “not-so-shy” coyote on Stoneridge.

Coyotes are usually wary and fearful of humans. But should you encounter a coyote, follow these important instructions:

  • stand tall, wave your arms and shout at it
  • do not make direct eye contact, which can be perceived as a threat
  • pick up small children (or small pets) to make them appear less vulnerable
  • do not turn your back or run – just like dogs, coyotes may chase you if you run
  • back away slowly while continuing to shout and wave

Oh my goodness .. a bold coyote spotted in West Carleton. What’s next? Perhaps deer wandering about outside of forested areas? Maybe a fox or two?
We, in beautiful downtown Kanata-South, have coyotes wandering about on NCC grounds and on the occassional street as we do fox and the odd deer but the deer seem to have moved on given the ongoing residential development.
The more we destroy their natural habitat, the more likely wildlife will be seen roaming about.
Don’t worry. They will move on.
