City Explores Next Steps in PILT Dispute

Subject / Objet Federal Court Ruling on PILTs Date: February 20, 2025
The purpose of this memo is to provide an update on the Federal Court’s ruling on the Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILTs) dispute related to various Federal Properties.
The Federal Court has determined that the Federal Government’s decision to pay the discounted PILTs rate was reasonable. The City is reviewing the decision in detail and discussing with external counsel to determine next steps.
The City of Ottawa will continue to report on the financial impacts through the Disposition of Tax and Rate Supported Operating Surplus/Deficit reports to the Finance and Corporate Services Committee.

Message to the Mayor and council. MANAGE your/OUR finances with care and reason and you will likely not need to go hat in hand begging for tax relief. Look at what should be considered discretionary spending (Landsdowne Tewin,bungled LRT, electric bus purchases to name a few) realize low interest rates are gone and have bitten you and act like the adults you are supposed to represent. DO the job you were elected to do and do it PROPERLY
