City Staff Worried About Fault For LRT Woes

Here is what city staff is most worried about concerning our disastrous light-rail project.

Fixing it? No.

Barrhaven West Councillor David Hill asked a straight-forward question of Ottawa city staff at transit committee this week.

What is the root cause of the problems with the light rail trains? Initially, the query wasn’t addressed.

Instead, the staffer discussed “fault”.

That’s No. 1 in the minds of Ottawa City Hall. Not how to fix this mess, but whose fault is it?

Then the staffer didn’t assign any fault. Instead, he said that couldn’t be determined.

No one was asking.

The question was about the root cause of the problems surrounding the light-rail trains.

The city responded by discussing fault. What fault? For what? Before the staffer had even addressed the real question. the staffer wanted to make sure that everyone knew no one was at fault. Fault for what? City staff was in full Sgt. Schultz mode.

If the train is not working properly after four years, somebody or something is at fault. But that wasn’t the question.

Nevertheless, what is top of mind among city staff? Not how to fix the train. Instead, who is at fault.

And the determination by city staff is that no one is at fault. Even the Flat Earth Society would have to admit that after four years since the derailment near Hurdman station and no fix, someone or something is at fault for not finding the problem..

But not city staff. No fault. Posteriors covered. Mission accomplished. Everything’s fine.

Fix the train? Don’t worry. That’s coming. Some day. Maybe.

  1. The Voter says:

Eyes on the career trajectory much?

It seems that the expected question and the one staff was most afraid of was who’s at fault. It didn’t occur to them that a councillor would want to know what the problem is and how to fix it.

That certainly shines a light on the priorities of staff. It doesn’t cross their minds that the first step to moving forward on this file is to identify what’s causing the problem and that the question of assigning blame would be much later in the process when one is approaching it from logic as opposed to self-interest.

Not much of a mystery as to why it’s taking years to get to the first steps. Any answer to a question that you’re not looking for is much less likely to cross your path that one you’re actively pursuing.
