Dudas Does City A Favour: BENN

What Councillor Laura Dudas did in her article in the Ottawa Citizen was explain why staff decided to increase the level of security at city hall.

That it fell on Orleans West-Innes representatives shoulders is because the city’s public-relations department failed to give an explanation beyond the vague term of “evolving” threats. This is the risk assessment being focused on councillors who are being harassed online, in person, in the workplace and at home.

This type of harassment is unacceptable. Period. Full stop. These social misfits who think that threatening anyone with physical harm because they don’t agree with decisions made need to stop, take a deep breath, take a close look in the mirror and ask themselves what their grandmother would say to them.

The context given by Dudas explains why security has not been upgraded at Constellation or Ben Franklin Place in Centrepointe – where almost a thousand more people report to work on behalf of the city than down on Laurier Avenue.

So, thank you councillor for letting us know why the incremental security was set up. And a note to the PR department – your work needs significant improvement.

Ron Benn, a finance executive, has been a member of the Centrepointe Community Association for the better part of three decades.

Speaking from the perspective of someone who doesn’t understand where the threats mentioned in the Citizen article stand in terms of criminal behavour, I have to wonder why more of this sort of thing isn’t being prosecuted? This is not an insignificant issue. If excellent people are discouraged from public service to the community, this has to be a serious threat to our democratic institutions. It begs the question whether some of this is organized with that intent in mind. And addressing it shouldn’t stop at treating the symptom with security measures, but should include a serious look at stopping the threat issue at the legal level as I see it.

    John:

I doubt the police can launch a successful arrest of these people. They don’t leave a trail.

It’s not as simple as it seems.

    cheers
