‘Everything Is Impermanent:’ QUOTABLE

“Everything is impermanent.”

Dhanushka Wickramasinghe who lost his wife, four children and a family friend
in a horrific killing spree a year ago in Barrhaven

Once the United States was our best friend. Now it is not.

Once we were certain of a growing economic future in Canada. Now we are not.

Once we sat on our hands watching great economic opportunities disappear before us. Necessity has given us a need to exploit them. It has made us wiser.

But on a personal level, nothing can match the change and grief of Dhanushka Wickramasinghe who lost his world around him in a few moments.

Tragedy has brought with it wisdom for Wickramasinghe and one of the most poignant quotes in recent Ottawa history: “Everything is impermanent.” He, more than most, knows that.

Life gives you everything and then it takes it away.

Nothing is permanent. Our institutions try to reinforce that everything is forever. Laws, buildings, order, lives … They are not.

Cherish what you have … now.

“Ozymandias”, a sonnet by Percy Bysshe Shelley (husband of Mary Shelley, the author of “Frankenstein”), and first published in 1818, comes to mind on a regular basis (think of DumboOld Trumpf’s golden statue on his re-imagined Gaza strip). It is the epitome of impermanence and remains relevant after almost 200 years. The only thing that seems permanent is the poem itself.
