Forget The World, Fix Transpo In Ottawa
OC Transpo might be a mess but that didn’t stop its general manager Renee Amilcar from becoming president of UIPT – Advancing Public Transport.
Hard to say exactly what the acronym UITP stands for because story after story on the organization just calls it “UITP”. But some ferreting around the internet discovered it stands for Union Internationale des Transports Publics. The non-profit organization, apparently, tries to promote public transportation systems around the world. It appears to hold conferences around the world as well. There’s a couple in Barcelona and Hamburg.
No word yet when a conference will be held in Barrhaven. This from an article in Cities Today:
The passenger must always be at the heart of what we do. Any technological development must be implemented to advance the needs of the passenger, not impede them. AI technologies are advancing quickly. Today, AI is mainly used to assist data analysis and predictive modelling. Already, many public transport organizations around the globe use the power of AI tools to make operations safer, more efficient, and more comfortable for passengers and maintenance more predictive and less costly.
This coming after the Westboro bus crash coroner’s inquiry made as its first recommendation that passenger safety should be the No. 1 concern of OC Transpo.
One wonders given the recommendations from the inquest, we await her public proclamations about how safety will be served at OC Transpo and how we might be able to have an LRT system that doesn’t burn through 750 axles.
Enough of the high-level statements and let’s get down-and-dirty fixing OC Transpo. These international organizations are superfluous to the critical reforms needed at Transpo.
