Except, Mike, for the fact that if you are only “passing through” that Gatineau address, you will have an address in Ontario where you actually live. Now, it could get a bit awkward if the Gatineau Police came to your permanent residence and started asking questions to verify your story – particularly if the wrong person, i.e. your lovely wife, answered the door.
The only people who will have to pay the consequences in Gatineau are those who can’t prove that they aren’t residents of Gatineau but of Ottawa. Of course, if the lease or mortgage on the Gatineau address has your name on it, that could be unhelpful. The same would apply if your kids’ school or your office had been given it as your home address. Ditto things like your utility bills or your health card.
So if you want to have a fling with a French woman, maybe you should choose a franco-ontarienne. Or, if you must cross the river, use a cab or the bus to avoid attracting attention.
