Governments Need To Get Back To Basics
So what concerns the National Capital Commission?
In response to public demand, a floating sauna. You can’t get enough of that. How much do you want to guess that it will be on-time and on-budget?
What else interests the NCC? Rebuilding already popular Westboro Beach. How do you rebuild a beach? More sand? More dredging? No construct a new building in response to public demand for a new structure at a beach.
Meanwhile, a critical piece of infrastructure, the Kitchi Zibi parkway doesn’t look like it will make its rebuild target of fall 2025. What are the NCC’s priorities? Why, floating saunas of course. A shiny little object to distract from the problems on the parkway.
What interests the City of Ottawa?
Fifteen-per-cent wage increases for councillors.
Meanwhile, the problem-plagued LRT is already two years late and probably will be later.
Priorities are fundamental to the city. And the first priority is to get the city’s infrastructure in shape … buildings, transit, roads. Good governance.
Good governance is not floating saunas nor councilor wage increases nor a night mayor, for that matter..
It’s getting the basics done and then, if there’s enough money left, embark on a few frills.
Forget the shiny little objects. Get down to business.
These are serious times. They demand serious government.

Well, the operative words here would be “serious government.”
The City of Ottawa and NCC governments have a long way to go before they could remotely be considered serious.
