Gower’s Tower Of Transit Ineptitude
There’s a certain irony is what Stittsville Councillor Glen Gower is saying in his newsletter excerpt below.
Walking, rolling and transit are the responsibilities of the City of Ottawa through its sidewalks, bike lanes, buses and LRT.
If times are tough all over in the commuting world, whose fault is that? Maybe the chairman of the transit commission Glen Gower. Sidewalks are a mess, biking could be better and public transit is late, unreliable and hardly comfortable.
And why the problems with public transit? Try New Ways To Bus, a supposed improvement that was really a trick to mask massive bus-route cuts. When did it become city policy to lie about improvements when they are really just cuts? It took angry transit riders complaining to councillors and the media to expose New Ways To Bus for the fraud that it was. Yet another reason that Ottawans, rightly, have no reason to trust what they are told by the City of Ottawa.

And who approved New Ways To Bus? Why chairman of the transit commission Glen Gower who is supposedly representing the interests of the public. If Ottawans are suffering because they are using transit, bike lanes and sidewalks, much of that responsibility resides with Gower. So essentially his newsletter excerpt below is complaint about his own work for many of the problems reside in his purview.
What Gower is saying about the suffering of the non-car commuter public is: “It’s my fault.” Did he not realize this when he was writing it?
Gower’s paragraph below is not very smart and another reason Gower should resign.
If the transit chairman wants to know why mass commuting is difficult, perhaps he should buy a mirror.

If you can drive or afford a car, you may not understand what it’s like to rely on walking, rolling, transit and asking for rides. But for nearly a third of people living in the Ottawa – people with disabilities, young people, seniors and people who can’t afford cars or gas – this is their every day. The Week Without Driving is an opportunity for those who have the option to drive to learn firsthand about the barriers and challenges that nondrivers face and work with nondrivers to create more accessible communities for all.

Do I understand Councillor Gower to be saying that the problems with transit lie with a lack of empathy from entitled car drivers?
