Hill Backs Speed Cameras … With Reservations
Regarding the news on speed cameras being pulled out of the community by the Provincial Government…I have some thoughts.
I understand folks are frustrated by the program. The City is becoming too loose about where staff put these cameras, and they should be limited to school zones. I also understand the frustration when speed cameras are active late at night outside of school hours. The speeds and timing triggers for cameras are set by a provincial board, and could be legislated by the province to have more appropriate triggers.

All that to be said, we need to be smarter about how we approach this program. But one of the most common concerns that gets raised to me by residents is speeding, and I’m in favour of using all the legal tools available to me to keep streets in school zones safe for children. How can I not, when the families of children hit by cars outside of schools ask that of me?
I’ll work with the Mayor and my colleagues to see how we can best advocate a compromise on this issue with the province, and I’ll be sure to keep you informed as the situation progresses. As always, if you feel strongly about this issue I want to hear from you! ….

The Premier is right. It is nothing but a tax grab.
Another contentious issue where the councillor has decided to sit on the fence.
There is no compromise on this issue. Ford has spoken and municipalities must adhere to his decision.
Speed cameras are cash grabs as is evident in areas where they have recently been installed.
School zones are one thing but elsewhere doesn’t lend validity to their use. Yes, they catch speeders but on rural roads?
School zones, yes. Elsewhere, no.
I cannot see the logic. Can it be a Cash grab if you break the law and get a ticket by a police officer? Is the camera different because you cannot try and outrun it?
I got 2 tickets, (a red light camera, and a speed camera). I do not get any now as I watch what I am doing when I drive. The police are fully trained to deal with complex issues and speed enforcement is not a good use of our tax money. Even with all the cameras, speeding is still a problem and behaviour is slow to change.
I am shocked to see my perception that children can be found everywhere in the city has been proven wrong.
Based on the comments made in the news by many citizens, now I understand they can ONLY be found in a school zone, during school hours, and nowhere else.
