How Many Council Votes Back Lansdowne?
uOttawa professor Evan Potter has done a head count on support for Lansdowne:
City council has 25 members including the mayor.
From X:
1/5 @Mike__Patton I wish it were not so, but @_MarkSutcliffe has 12 Yes votes. As I argue in my substack column, here’s why…#ottpoli @KenGray @bpellerin @JCHIANELLO @LeiperOttawa https://t.co/fo25jbyU0I

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe’s slight advantage in numbers can be supported with the use of the age-old trading of political favours. An art form that former mayor Jim Watson excelled at.
Putative mayoral candidate Kitchissippi Councillor Jeff Leiper has less leverage to offer. As chair of the planning committee, perhaps he can offer to expedite this or stall that. But with what is effectively 9-10 months remaining in this council’s term … As for favours to be repaid ‘when’ he becomes mayor, ‘when’ only applies if he wins the next mayoral campaign.
Politics is very much about exercising power. And power is only available to those who have it.
There should be some sort of control over major $100 million and up? project votes. Suggestion one. No longer a simple majority a required 2/3 support? Suggestion Two. A full municipal plebiscite so all wards can be heard. There is little “benefit” for Rideau Goulborn, Osgoode and yet they too pay for the supposed benefit in centertown wards. Likewise centertown folk are not overly concerned about Kanata or Stittsville beyond how it affects the taxes. The perceived “threat of public oversight” might cause some representatives to be more diligent and cautious about being sheep in the mayors flock!
