How To Catch The Wily Idler: THE VOTER
I’m waiting to hear how they plan to catch all these idling miscreants under the new bylaw.
Don’t they have to catch you in the act or have other evidence before they can write you up? What are the chances of a bylaw officer happening to be around to witness your one to 10 minutes of idling?
Does he or she stand around for 10 minutes in below 0C or above 27C to bear witness to the length of time you’ve been idling? Remember, that time is for an occupied vehicle. What’s to stop me sitting in my car, running the motor for nine minutes, shutting it off for two and switching it back on for another nine?
Particularly if there’s a bylaw officer in view.

It’s easy. Every school bus is subject to this law as is every taxi. Ignoring all OSHA rules, the city has mandated these people must work in extreme cold or heat without the benefits of heat or fans. And as school bus drivers are paid so poorly, just one ticket at $500 and there’s a good chance that they will all quit.
I wonder how many by-law officers will get tickets when they leave their motors running when the get out of their cars to ticket people who have left their motors running while clearing their cars in their driveways? Just saying!
Will by-law officers be standing/sitting around outside in civvies while they wait to catch by-law breakers in -15 degree weather or will they be sitting in City of Ottawa vehicles, engines running? Also, what’s the difference between a car idling for 3 minutes in a driveway versus idling in traffic that’s not moving during rush hour? The real idlers are the ones sitting behind desks inside 110 Laurier Avenue trying to justify their jobs and pensions.
