One of the many problems the that councillors face is their inability to understand that the debt incurred to fund this year’s capital budget will be paid from the following years’ (note the plural) operating budgets.

To be clear, the funds to repay the half billion or so dollars of Lansdowne debt will clog the arteries of the next several decades of operating budgets. Even if the rosy, overly optimistic, far from objective, cash flows presented by staff are achieved.

To complete the thought, city revenues that could be used to increase the funding for public transit, a critical public service, will be used to pay the interest charges and repay the debt incurred for a ‘nice to have’ half billion dollar sole sourced amenity.

It seems in all levels of government……people with grandiose ideas are the ones to get elected……totally out of touch with reality……..paid for with someone else’s money…….
The wealthy get elected and dream and spend……the poor working guy slaves away to pay for these dreams……many ideas are impractical, but that’s OK, since it is only tax payers’ money

AND GOD HELP THE TAXPAYERS IF THEY DEMAND ANY TAX MONEY BACK TO MAKE THEIR LIVES EASIER.

I WISH ORDINARY PRACTICAL. PEOPLE COULD GET ELECTED, ….FARMERS, CLERKS, BUS DRIVERS, MOMS ,……….PRACTICAL PPEOPLE WITH COMMON SENSE……..BUT THEY DON’T HAVE THE ELITE OR MONEY CONNECTIONS TO GET ELECTED.

  3. Wilson Lo says:

Fair criticism. I’d actually argue the two positions don’t mix at all.

I supported following through with the Lansdowne planning process back in 2023, but nothing since then has made me feel any better about the project (in fact, much of what’s been shared so far has done the opposite).
