For customers, this means that:
On Friday, September 26, Line 1 will fully close at 8 pm. Full R1 service will run between Tunney’s Pasture and Blair stations
After 11:30 pm on September 27, 29, 30, and October 1 and 2, Line 1 service will only be available on one platform at some stations. Line 1 service will continue to run in both directions between Tunney’s Pasture and Blair stations, but customers may experience slightly longer wait times. Signage will be in place at affected stations.
During this maintenance period, RTM will conduct various activities to ensure the long-term sustainability of the system and improve the service reliability of Line 1. This work includes:
Rail replacement between Rideau and uOttawa stations
Rail grinding across the entire system
Ongoing upgrades of supporting cables (parafils) of the overhead catenary system, to make them more resilient and durable
General station maintenance and seasonal cleaning
An additional closure of O-Train Line 1 is planned for maintenance work on the weekend of October 4 and 5, with details to follow.

Why they are doing a Rail replacement isn’t mentioned. It’s like there’s a big part of the info missing.
Something bigger is afoot
I rode the LRT when it opened and that section has an obvious problem. The curves were too tight causing grinding and unusual noise as well as crazy slow speed. In time I believe the curves will need widening, until then slow speed and replacing wheels and rails is the temporary solution. The question now is when will they admit the root cause?
Hey C,
Mentioning the rail replacement would be accepting fault.
Urban Rail requires their rails be inspected every 5 years and I’m pretty sure they don’t pass inspection in Ottawa. There is something seriously wrong here and the cover up is on.
Hmmm … ??? As per usual the ‘why’ is missing. It would be nice to have the full story but that would be asking for too much.
I have, since the initial derailment and need to replace axles and bearings on a frequent basis, been of the expressed opinion that the radius of the line was too tight and the continual grinding and now early replacement of a section goes to reinforce this thought. The continual temporary “fix” and lack of transparency coupled with no clear explanation as to the WHY is more fuel on the fire of suspicion. Nobody will accept fault, including the myriad of politicos who have performed poorly throughout the whole farce of LRT. Bus RT as given to Ottawa by Andy Haydon is again being proven.
